Russell Edward Westerfield, most recently from Melbourne Beach, FL, went to be with the Lord on March 24, 2018. Preceded in death by his parents, Walton Orville Westerfield and Bonnie Lena Baker Westerfield, he was their only son. He is survived by his wife, Bonny Joe New Westerfield. Bonny and Russ Westerfield were married for over 60 years. He is also survived by 3 children: R. Edward Westerfield, II, of Phoenix, AZ; Charles (Mary) Westerfield of Melbourne Beach, FL, and Laura (Reuben) Dickenson of Brentwood, TN. Russ was blessed with 9 grandchildren, Kathleen (David) Smith, Charles Douglas Westerfield, Jr, Annie Marie Westerfield, Stephanie (Bret) Fishkind, Daniel Reed Westerfield, Julia Grace Dickenson, Reuben Dabney Dickenson V, Russell Walton Dickenson and Robert Samuel Dickenson; 3 great grandchildren, Evelyn Claire Smith, Bryn Sophia Fishkind and Brayden Weston Fishkind. He served honorably in the US Army as a Military Policeman during the Korean Conflict. He studied at Sue Bennett College in London, KY and University of Louisville. He was a graduate of the Manufacturing Engineering program at General Electric. He had a 35-year career with General Electric in Appliance Park, Louisville KY and in Decatur AL. One of his proudest accomplishments was being one of the “Founding Fathers” of the plant in Decatur. He was an amazing engineer with a practical ability to make things work. Cars were his specialty. He had the ability to accurately diagnose car trouble based on a conversation over the phone. During his retirement years in Melbourne Beach FL, Russ was always tinkering in the garage and was able to maintain a home in excellent working condition. There was little he could not fix, repair, install or create with PVC piping. Russ served as an Elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Decatur AL, a Boy Scout leader for his boys, Eddie and Charlie, and an active youth mentor with Junior Achievement with Laura. In his later years he developed a passion for golf and he loved being a member at Burningtree Country Club. He later spent time volunteering as a Starter and Ranger at Spessard Holland Golf Course in Melbourne Beach, FL. He was proud owner of a hole-in-one at Spessard Holland. He loved spending time with his family and helping them out in any way he could. A graveside ceremony will be held in London, KY, at Campground Cemetery at 11am on Saturday, May 19, 2018 with Rev. Delmer Gross officiating. London Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
