Alton Gilmore Burkhart, 87, of Lily, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on October 15, 2021.He was born January 14, 1934, in a log cabin in Lily, Kentucky, the son of the late Martha Ella (Woodward) Burkhart and John Clarence Burkhart. Having been preceded in death by his younger brother, Roy Lee Burkhart, he was the only living son. On September 8, 1961, he married Sarah Marie Burkhart, who survives his death.He attended Slate Ridge and Lily School and went on to work for Southern Bell, Elicon, Laurel County School Systems (bus driver), and the City of London, where he retired. He was an avid farmer, loving to garden both food and flowers. He is known for his gentle and humble spirit. As he gardened, he gave. If he knew someone needed food, he would show up with a blessing. Much of his time was dedicated to his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Alton never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him.He is survived by his wife, Sarah M. Burkhart; 2 daughters: Treshia Hammock, Sheila Adams and John Adams; 1 son: John Alan Burkhart; 11 grandchildren: Jason Coffey (Crystal), Juliet Hood (preceded in death), Nick Coffey, Tasha Soper (David), Justin Roberts (Crystal), Joseph Hammock (Jennifer), Aaron Coffey (Ashley), Jordan Hammock, Cherish Brooks (Johnny), Jaycee Coffey, Jacob Coffey; 19 great grandchildren.Visitation for the family and friends will be open on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 2:00-4:00, with a celebration of Alton’s life following at 4:00 p.m. at London Funeral Home, with Bro. Jerry Lewis and Bro. Billy Evans officiating, burial will follow at Cumberland Memorial Gardens, Lily, KY.Pallbearers will be Jason Coffey, Nicholas Coffey, Justin Roberts, Joseph Hammock, Aaron Coffey, Jordan Hammock and Jacob Coffey.
